The most isolated coastline on the Great Lakes stretches for 180 roadless kilometres from Marathon to Wawa. On this 10-day guided trip you will experience the best of Lake Superior–rugged cliffs and headlands, sweeping sand beaches and thundering waterfalls. This coastline features a vibrant human history including aboriginal pictographs, “Pukaskwa Pits,” lighthouses and abandoned fishing outposts. This sea kayak leadership course prepares prospective wilderness guides and expedition paddlers for trips on the Great Lakes. Topics include leadership theory, meal planning and preparation, weather, nature interpretation, low-impact camping, navigation and first aid. We cover this material over the course of a four-day trip in Lake Superior Provincial Park. This comprehensive course is standard training for wilderness guides with Naturally Superior Adventures and provides a great introduction to sea kayak tripping for recreational paddlers. Paddle Canada’s advanced-level sea kayaking skills course provides rough-water, scenarios-based training for prospective trip leaders and expedition paddlers. Level III skills builds on previous Paddle Canada courses by reviewing fundamental paddling skills and perfecting them in wind, waves and current. Theory topics include advanced navigation and tidal planning techniques. On this five-day course you will be responsible for leading a group of paddlers on a wilderness trip in challenging conditions and responding to a variety of rescue-based scenarios. This four-day sea kayaking skills course builds on the foundation techniques of Level I to prepare intermediate-level paddlers for overnight trips. The course begins with a thorough review of Level I material with advanced variations and new rescues (including the Eskimo roll). Theory topics include comprehensive navigation and tides workshops, trip planning and low-impact camping. This course includes an overnight trip. Perfect of novices, this two-day course provides an introduction to the fundamental skills of sea kayaking necessary for day trips on sheltered water. Topics include efficient forward and turning strokes, assisted rescues, self-rescues and an overview of sea kayak design and equipment. This is an excellent comprehensive course for those looking to develop a solid set of paddling skills.

Depending on availability, custom sea kayak trips can be arranged for destinations anywhere on Lake Superior and northern Lake Huron, as well as British Columbia, Quebec and Newfoundland. Minimal outfitting is provided: You must supply your own sea kayak, equipment and meals (rentals can be arranged).

For adventurous sea kayakers, Newfoundland is Canada’s last frontier. Rugged headlands, sea stacks, impossibly steep granite fjords and perfect cobblestone campsites are the norm on the Southwest Coast. From the small end-of-the-road community of Burgeo, we paddle 90 kilometres of North Atlantic coastline east to the boat access-only outport of Francois. Along the way on this weeklong trip we’ll camp amid the austere remains of abandoned fishing communities and enjoy afternoon hikes in the barren “tuckamore” terrain. For advanced sea kayakers only; minimal outfitting provided.

From the quaint village of Rossport in the newly created Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area, this weeklong sea kayak adventure traces the northernmost shore of Lake Superior to the town of Marathon. This wilderness area features remote islands, rugged headlands and a unique volcanic geology. The sweeping coastline of Neys Provincial Park, made famous by Group of Seven painter Lawren Harris, is a scenic highlight. Since the coastline is very exposed, this 120-kilometre-long trip is suitable for intermediate to advanced sea kayakers with experience paddling in wind and waves.
